Our Staff, and a few of their favorites

Chris Steele
Senior minister

Bible verses: Proverbs 3:5-6

On ministry: I enjoy working with people and building relationships. I wake up every morning knowing that today, at any moment, another person’s life story could change forever and I get to be a part of that. It is an awesome thing.

Book: The Ragamuffin Gospel, by Brennan Manning. Right now, I’m reading Aquachurch 2.0, Visioneering (again), and Communicating for Change (again). Great books to soak up and learn from.

Movie: Braveheart. It shows the courage of one man to do the right thing and lead others to freedom.

Hobbies and pastimes: Golf, reading, and softball, being with family.

Food: Steak.

Kyle Turner
Student Minister

Bible verses: Mark 10:45

On ministry: Back in college I knew I wanted to make an impact in the lives of middle and high school students. At a youth conference on campus my freshman year, I heard students talk about the impact their youth ministers were having in their lives. Right then, I decided that I wanted to make an eternal impact, so I changed my major from education to youth ministry.

Hobbies and pastimes: Anything to do with baseball, football, college basketball—both playing and watching. Spending time with my family.

Book: Can We Do That? by Andy Stanley

Movie: Any good comedy. There’s nothing like a great belly laugh.

Food: I love Mexican and Chinese food...but not mixed together.

Dan Farrer
Minister of business administration

Bible verses: The books of Proverbs and James, especially Proverbs 21:5

On ministry: My dad was a minister and no stranger to hands-on work. One man came to Christ after talking and working with my dad laying tile in a church kitchen. I grew up doing ministry; it was our family life. I also found myself enjoying the administration side of business. As a church administrator, God has brought together the best of both worlds for me.

Hobbies and interests: Traveling. Research and learning, reading—both non-fiction and fiction, studying computer technology and best business practices. Meditating on scripture—thinking about why an author made certain word choices, what the situation was, what the “current news” of the day was. I like historical fiction such as Pontius Pilate by Paul Maier and the A.D. Chronicles series by Bodie and Brock Thoene.

Food: Pretty much anything on the plate in front of me. Especially red velvet cake.

Mary Overmeyer
front desk volunteer

Bible verses: Luke 6:27-38

Movie: It’s a Wonderful Life. Wonderful message. Our lives touch others in ways we don’t realize. Our lives are our witness.

Book: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Hobbies and pastimes: Painting, drawing, crafting, sewing, reading, spending time with friends and family, supporting activities at the school where I worked. The truth is, I have so many interests that what I enjoy most depends on the day.

Food: Crab cakes...and chocolate

Jason Kemerly
Minister of Worship Arts

Bible verses: Some speak to my heart daily like Romans 8:1-4, Hebrews 8:12, John 3:16-17.

On ministry: I get to be used by God to help tell His story and make Him known in the lives of others. Seeing lives transformed and watching people be baptized into Christ brings tears to my eyes every time!

Book: Crazy Love by Francis Chan and Can We Do That? by Andy Stanley

Hobbies and interests: Golf, music, basketball and hanging out with my awesome wife and kids!

Food: Wings from BW’s

Karla May
Director, Children’s Ministry

Bible verses: Lamentations 3:21-26

On ministry: I didn’t intend to be in children’s ministry. I was a teacher, which I loved, but then I moved into the area of administration at the Christian school where I taught. I found that I missed my interaction with the kids. I began praying about where and how the Lord would have me serve, and He brought me here...I love getting to hang out with the kids and sharing with them how much God loves them.

Book: Christian fiction, especially anything by Karen Kingsbury or Dee Henderson

Movie: I like lots of movies, but the Lord of the Rings trilogy is a favorite, partly because I loved the books and partly because it became a Christmas tradition to go see the newest release each year.

Hobbies and pastimes: Reading, crafting things out of wood, working in the yard, and being with family.

Food: Steak and fried potatoes

Don Schaffer
Director, Family Support Center

Bible verses: Ephesians 6:10-18

On ministry: We need to offer activities for all age groups, strengthen families, and provide a casual way for people to introduce friends to the church and the good news of Jesus Christ. That’s what the Family Support Center is for. What motivates me? Love of Christ, people, and sports. What a great combination!

Book: I’m not a big reader, but the Terry Bradshaw bio was great laughs, and the Left Behind series was great!

Hobbies and pastimes: Model railroading, attending sporting events, traveling, visiting family.

Food: There is nothing like GOOD meatloaf.

Karen Ross
Administrative Assistant

Bible verses: I have many favorites, but let’s use Psalm 116:5-9, Isaiah 25:8-9, Revelation 21:4

On her job: When I came face to face with God in the person of Jesus Christ, my life changed forever. Within two years I found myself at Christ’s Church. I served in children’s ministry and dramatic productions, then as a financial secretary. Becoming the administrative assistant here was a humbling blessing. I love God, love His church, and the people I work with. I don’t know where I’d be if not working here.

Book: How about The Highlander’s Last Song by George MacDonald, and Jane Austen’s works, plus The Testament and The Last Juror by John Grisham.

Movie: To Kill a Mockingbird (Gregory Peck), and Les Miserables (Liam Neeson). Plus the A&E television network miniseries of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Great stuff.

Hobbies and pastimes: Reading, quilting, cooking, riding bikes and walking.

Food: Buttered, pan-grilled toast with grape jelly.

George Lehlbach
Custodian

Bible verses: The Book of Revelation

On his job: I like to be able to look around and see that what I’ve done looks good and professionally kept. That gives me a good feeling of accomplishment.

Hobbies and pastimes: Working on my truck or doing other kinds of hands-on mechanical work.

Food: Pasta.
