Some say the idea for a new church in northeast
Fort Wayne was first discussed at the kitchen table of Steve and Betsy Noyes.
From these conversations and prayer, the church came to life in August 1969
with the first service held at the Glenbrook Theaters auditorium behind Glenbrook
Square mall. Sixty people attended. From that small start the church grew, building
a basic facility on Maplecrest Road in 1971 then expanding it two times in later
years. In 1975, a children’s education wing was added, and in 2002, the
most recent construction finished, doubling the size of the building with a
new worship center, kitchen, classrooms, and gym. The existing structure was
remodeled at the same time.
In January 1970, the congregation called Jerry
Paul as the church’s first minister. Jerry served for more than 24 years
before assuming leadership of Great Lakes Christian College, Lansing, MI, in
1994. Bob Hudson followed Jerry’s tenure, ministering here until he retired,
and in 2007, the congregation called Chris Steele, who serves today as our senior
minister.
The staff has grown from one senior minister
to a group of five ministerial leaders—senior, worship arts, student,
children’s, and business administration—plus an administrative assistant,
custodian, and part time family support center director. In addition, ministry
teams of volunteers lead various ministry and outreach efforts. In 2003, two
congregations began sharing one building as Christ’s Church opened its
original chapel area for use by Myanmar Indigenous Christian Church. Led by
Abraham Thang, the Myanmar church now holds two services each Sunday afternoon
for Burmese people living in the Fort Wayne area.
Christ’s Church at Georgetown, however,
is more than a building and more than staff. Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone
of our church. Celebrating 40 years of ministry in August 2009, we are a church
family committed to encouraging one another and sharing life in Him—worshipping,
growing, and serving together. Our real story from past years is not about building
projects, but about bonds of friendship and support formed among members of
this body, outreach to others with the help of the Holy Spirit, and lives changed.
Bible study fellowships have strengthened our
understanding of what it means to follow Christ, and provided a foundation for
action—as well as security—in the midst of whatever life brings.
People have shared burdens and held each other accountable—sitting together
in hospital rooms, supporting each other in loss, sharing parenting ideas and
work situations, struggles and triumphs... and laughing together when it’s
all good.
Through Christ’s Church at Georgetown,
people have also answered the call to ministry. They have been ordained, prayed
over, and sent out to bring the knowledge of Jesus Christ to others. Others
have been called to lay ministry through para-church organizations. Still other
people have answered the call to missions work. Long-term missionaries have
been sent to Japan, Southeast Asia, and Africa, to name some. Short-term missionaries
have worked in places like Hong Kong, Panama, and Brazil.
In our 40-year history, people have come here
seeking something, they have discovered and were changed by Christ Jesus, and
have gone out to serve others in His name. Because of Him, we look forward to
the future with anticipation and say with the psalmist, “This is the day
the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
